EXCLUSIVE: FRSC can no longer fine motorist, court rules.

Image
A federal high court in Lagos has declared void powers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to impose fines on motorists for traffic offences. John Tsoho, a judge, held that the commission could not turn itself into a court of law by punishing those who commit traffic offences. Tope Alabi, a lawyer, had approached the court to declare that only a court of competent jurisdiction could pronounce a person guilty under section 10 (4) and 28 (2) of the FRSC Act 2007. Other defendant in the suit was the attorney-general of the federation. The judge also awarded N1million damages in favour of the plaintiff because officials of the FRSC had confiscated his vehicle and driver’s licence. Tosho said while FRSC was statutorily empowered to arrest and fine traffic offenders, a closer look at the definition of the word “fine” meant a pecuniary criminal punishment or civil penalty payable to the public treasury. “In the instant case, however, the involvement of the element of a...

ABSURD: Iran bans newspaper for reporting George Clooney's support of Charlie Hebdo, See reasons..

Image
Iran has ordered the closure of a daily newspaper which published a front-page story with a picture of George Clooney wearing a badge in support of Charlie Hebdo. The Mardom e-Emruz, or Today’s People, ran the picture of the actor at the Golden Globes with the headline “I’m Charlie too”. Mohammad Ghoochani, chief editor of the paper, told the Tasnim news agency that his paper had been forced to close. While the newspaper did not express support for Charlie Hebdo or the star’s sentiments, judges branded the headline “obscene”. Iran’s government condemned the attack on the Charlie Hebdo’s offices and also the magazine itself, saying that publishing caricatures of Muhammed was “provocative” and an insult to Islam. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any depiction of the Prophet Muhammed is considered blasphemous. There have been further protests in the Muslim world against the magazine’s latest front cover, which has now been printed 7,000,000 times. Protesters demonstrated outside...

DETAILS: What Really Happened In Baga, Nigeria?

Image
The exact death toll in Baga and 16 surrounding villages is unknown, with estimates ranging from “dozens” to 2000 or more. “No one stayed back to count bodies,” one local resident told Human Rights Watch. “We were all running to get out of town ahead of Boko Haram fighters who have since taken over the area.” Satellite imagery acquired by Human Rights Watch reveals evidence of large-scale destruction, particularly in the town of Doro Gowon, the site of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) base, a few kilometers from Baga. Nigeria, Chad, and Niger established the MNJTF in 1998, initially to check criminal activities in the border areas between the three countries. The MNJTF expanded in 2012 to include Cameroon and Benin and cover counterterrorism operations against Boko Haram in the region. The satellite images, taken in the days following the attacks, provide direct evidence of extensive areas of fire-related damages to local buildings and trees, consistent with a systematic camp...

Russia to respond to bans asymmetrically

Image
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says the new round of sanctions against Moscow over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine could trigger an “asymmetric” response from his country. “If there are sanctions, linked with energy, [or] further restrictions on our finance sector, we will have to respond asymmetrically,” Medvedev in an interview with the Vedomosti newspaper published on Monday. “For instance, restrictions in transport area. We act on the premise of friendly relations with our partners, and this is why the sky above Russia is open for flights. But if we are restricted, we will have to answer,” the Russian premier added. He further said that certain Western airlines could go bankrupt if they were banned from using Russian airspace. On September 5, the European Union said it had agreed on a new package of economic sanctions against Russia over its stance on the crisis in Ukraine. Tightening the existing measures, which had been imposed in July, the sanctions hit more individuals wi...

Revealed: CONFESSIONS OF THE BOKO HARAM ‘NEGOTIATOR’

Image
Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davies, who alleged that he was engaged by President Goodluck Jonathan to dialogue with Boko Haram for the release of the abducted Chibok school girls recently mentioned some highly placed Nigerians as sponsors of the Islamic militant sect. In a series of interviews both in his homeland and with some international networks in London, Davis has specifically accused the former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, and immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ihejirika (rtd) of funding Boko Haram. An unnamed former top official of the Central Bank of Nigeria has also been fingered by him as providing funds and other logistics for the sect. Quite naturally, the allegations by Davis have excited many Nigerians while the people he accused of duplicity have been defending themselves and making counter-allegations. Who really is Davis? "It was at Shell in the mid 2000s that he began peace negotiations with rebels in the Niger Delta. He then serv...

Crisis In Ukraine: Shelling near Donetsk challenges ceasefire

Image
Fresh shelling has been reported in eastern Ukraine less than two days after the government and Russian-backed rebels agreed to a ceasefire. Explosions were heard and clouds of smoke were seen late on Saturday night near Mariupol, a port city an hour outside of Donetsk, with a volunteer battalion of Ukrainian fighters claiming to have been hit by Grad rockets. The explosions were reported on the outskirts of the city, where Ukrainian troops have been holding defensive lines against the rebels. The Azov Battalion reported the attack on Facebook, but did not give further details. The reports of renewed conflict come just days after  a ceasefire was negotiated  by Ukraine and the Russian-backed separatists who have been fighting in the country’s east for more than four months. Earlier in the day, the presidents of Ukraine and Russia said the ceasefire was mostly holding, but the truce appeared fragile as both sides accused the other of violations. Mariupol, on the coast of t...

U.S. launches new airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq

Image
TBILISI, Georgia —  The U.S. military opened a new front in its air war in Iraq late Saturday, launching a series of strikes against Islamic State fighters who had been threatening to seize control of a second giant dam that generates electricity and irrigation for much of the country. The airstrikes were carried out against targets near Haditha Dam, which stretches more than five miles across the ancient Euphrates River in western Iraq, about 150 miles northwest of Baghdad, according to a U.S. defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing military operations. The attacks marked a sharp escalation of the U.S. military campaign that began Aug. 8, when President Obama ordered the Pentagon to intervene in Iraq to stem the rapid advance of Islamic State, a well-armed Sunni extremist group that has swept across the north and west of the country. For now, Obama has imposed tight limitations on the U.S. military operations, directing the Pentagon to take action o...

Islamic scholars and leaders of various Islamic organisations have reacted to the appointment of the immediate past governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano. The National Amir (President) of The Muslim Congress, TMC, Luqman AbdurRaheem, described Mr. Sanusi as a perfect successor for the late Emir Ado Bayero. Mr. AbdurRaheem said Mr. Sanusi possesses the good quality to continue the good work of the late emir. “The late Ado Bayero has left a big shoe and Allah has guided the Kano emirate to choose someone with great intellectual and professional capacity to fill the vacuum. Sanusi is well learned both in Islamic and western education. His ascendancy to the throne will definitely reduce the growing insecurity in the North,” Mr. AbdurRaheem said. JUST IN:Kano Isolation As FG Ban Private Jets From Landing in Kano

Image
Chris Olukolade, the spokesperson for the Nigerian military revealed to Premium Times that the ban was for “security reasons” and declined to state the nature of the security concerns. But a source in the military has revealed that the directive is connected with Sunday’s crowning of Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano. “After the Emir was appointed, there were lots of protests from the group supporting the late Emir’s son. The security agencies must have felt that certain actions need to be taken,” the source, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak for the military, said. Yakubu Dati, the spokesperson for the Nigerian aviation parastatals, said the military usually takes such decisions when there are security concerns. “We as an authority, we have not banned any plane from landing in Kano. You know there is civil aviation and there is also military aviation which supersedes ours,” Mr. Dati said. “They don’t consult anybody. They just go ahead with thei...
