irreconcilable differences as the reason for the breakdown.
Griffith, 56, has
hired power attorney Laura Wasser to handle the case.
The couple, who met
and fell in love on the set of the 1995 film Two Much, have been dogged by
rumours their marriage was in trouble for the past 12 months despite enduring
one of the strongest Tinseltown has seen in recent years.
She is asking for
child support, sole physical and joint legal custody of their 17-year-old
daughter Stella as well as spousal support.
It will be
Griffith’s fourth divorce.
Previously she was
twice married to Miami Vice star Don Johnson and Scarface Steve Bauer.
It will be
Spanish-born Banderas' second divorce after separating with his first wife Ana
Leza in May 1995.
Griffith and
Banderas said in a statement issued by their publicist: "We have
thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost 20 years marriage
in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family
and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together."
Melanie tweeted a
snap of Antonio topless on holiday in March looking really chuffed with his
hands in the air, sparking hope their marriage was as strong as ever.
She was spotted
looking happy and chilled out on Thursday as she attended the AFI tribute to
Jane Fonda minus her husband, but with close pal Eva Longoria.
